Gretna United Methodist Church - Missions & Outreach
John Wesley and his fellow believers saw our work in the simplest terms. To paraphrase his inspiring words:
"Do all the good you can, in all the places you can, to all the people you can."
United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)
UMCOR is the humanitarian relief and development agency of the United Methodist Church, a worldwide denomination. Compelled by Christ, UMCOR responds to natural or human made disasters—those interruptions of such magnitude that they overwhelm a community's ability to recover on its own.
Our One Great Hour of Sharing offering goes to support the administrative costs of UMCOR, so that all donations to UMCOR relief can go to work for those in need.
Connectional Giving
One way we accomplish our mission is through our apportioned funds, a method of giving that proportionally allocates the general church budget to conferences (which subsequently apportion to local churches). More simply put, United Methodist Churches all contribute to the denomination based on membership and other factors so that together, we can accomplish a lot. This method of giving has become a strong, generous tradition and a personal, lifelong commitment.
Together, through our connected congregations, we United Methodists accomplish what no single church, district or annual conference ever could hope to do. In this way, each individual, each family, each congregation gives a fair share for the church's work. We combine our prayers, presence, gifts and service to make a significant difference in the lives of God's people…in every place we can; as often as we can.
Brush-Up Nebraska Paint-a-Thon
The Brush Up Nebraska Paint-A-Thon is a community based volunteer program that paints the homes of low-income elderly and low-income disabled homeowners so that they may maintain their property, increase energy efficiency, and beautify the community.
Food Pantries - Gretna Neighbors & Pearl Memorial UMC
Our United Methodist Women lead the charge in the fight against hunger. We support both the Gretna Neighbors Pantry and the Pearl Memorial Food Pantry in Omaha.
Communion Offerings
When we receive communion, we take up an offering to respond to needs both here and abroad. Past offerings have supported Gretna Neighbors, The Wesley House, Hallam United Methodist Church, World Communion Sunday, just to name a few.
Gretna Neighbors
This past year, we adopted 4 families through Gretna Neighbors to provide Christmas gifts for the family. The congregation enthusiastically purchased items on the family's wish lists and delivered them to Gretna Neighbors for delivery.
We're doing it again in 2009! We will soon have a Christmas wish list for four families that you can help adopt. The gift tags will be available in the Narthex of the Church shortly after Thanksgiving.
